Usually growers tend to get rid of the leaf closest to the pumpkin once they know its a keeper, It would touch the pumpkin once this grows bigger, and a shade structure would be in its way. Any pumpkins that dont grow should be cut off. Pumpkins on the main tend to grower longer and bigger anyway. Sidevine pumpkins are done when the mainpumpkins abort. Or when the growers wishes to have several pumpkins of the same plant to make genetic crosses.

sorry to say your season is about over dover.black spots are some form of disease. its late to start growing a pumpkin anywhay so with an earlier start next year ( may ?) you might do better. buy some books and read a lot is my suggestion pap

The hive pattern sounds kinda like cantaloping...normal for maturing fruit or healing where some sort of damage occurred.
