ALAN THE OFFICIAL PUMPKIN KING OF FLORIDA DOES IT AGAIN
NEW FLORDIA RECORD OF 840 LBS SET A FEW DAYS AGO BY ALAN "CT LONG GOURD KING" REYNOLDS. THAT FLORIDA TRANSPLANT FROM DURHAM CT FAME.
ALANS PUMPKIN WAS GROWN OFF THE 1689 JOE "CALL ME CHAMPION" JUSTRAS SEED.
THE FRUIT WAS 19 PERCENT HEAVY. ALAN DID VERY LITTLE TO THE PLANT AND FEELS WITH A GOOD EFFORT A 1,000 POUNDER COULD BE GROWN IN THE DEEP SOUTH. DITTO TO GEORGIA AS THAT NEW STATE RECORD ALSO INDICATES WHAT CAN BE DONE THAT WE PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT IMPOSSIBLE

unfortunately glen i dont think alan has to prove himself to anyone.hes been at it for many years. besides who cares anyway? its just a 840 pound pumpkin. its not like hes claiming he produced a world record. the significant accomplishment is that it was another good size pumpkin grown in the deep south. besides alan would not lie about something like this.

I'm mearly pointing out that rules are rules....guidelines are guidelines. When we instruct our new growers as to the protocol of getting an official wieght with witnesses and paperwork its for everyone...a name, no pictures, no diary, no info at all...even with a recommendation from a seasoned grower is not appropriate in declaring a state record. This post, being on the "New Grower's Forum" should exemplify the right way to do things. Brad Wursten....The Cooks....Lee Taylor...official State/Location Records.....Alan Reynolds--unofficial Fla pumpkin king. Pap...everybody cares....and you care because you posted it ! Its a tremendous accomplishment in a hostile environment by a guy I consider a friend. Go Alan Go !!! (and post a pic so we know what a finished successful 1689 looks like !!)

Way to go Alan! As far as im concerned no proof is needed. I have meet Mr. Reynolds and he is an outstanding man, whose word need not be questioned.
Glen it would have been VERY easy for you to say what you had to say in a more tactful and less accusing manner. It is my opinion that you purposely made this abrasive and accusing with the intentions of stirring things up. I swear that you remind me more and more every day of a twisted old woman. Even those fellow pumpkin growers that you think are your friends are starting to see the real you. You would be surprised I think to know those who actually have a strong dislike for you. Many of those who you think are your friends actually are not. In a way I actually feel kind of sorry for you. Obviously you must live a very meaningless life that has little joy in it or you have some wires crossed somewhere. Regardless, I look forward to the next time our paths cross and I’m positive they will someday in the near future.

Wow . Mike...what will happen when our paths cross? Mr Leonzi...not an attempt to stir anything up for the sake of stirring up. I'm sorry you feel that way. Perhaps I should explain.... Last summer Brad had a great squash approaching a new world record but there was to be no gpc site within reach and it was to be weighed at "home". It was explained to me that all the ducks would need to be in order...pics, certifications, witnesses etc in order for any non-GPC governed site to be ackwnoledged as an official record....and that in the shadow of the 1233 incident it was in the hobby's interest...GPC or not.... that this be done ! So this was all done to satisfy the community and more importantly, the GPC. So now, when a fervent GPC spokesman calls an unofficial wieght with no pics or anything a state record I think it should be corrected. Isn't that only fair? I support the GPC...I support proper proceedures for verification...I support Rhode Island...Pap....pumpkins, squash...and Alan ! But when one guy has to jump through hoops everyone should. Mike--your issue with me goes way beyond this thread. I won't even address your classless comments, but I really am curious about your last sentence....feel free...LIpumpkin@msn.com

Mike, I don't think Glenn was accusing anyone of anything, all he was asking for is a little documentation is all. What is fair for one is fair for all, whats wrong with that?
You cant tell me if some no name grower from Iowa claimed the state record this year by just word of mouth, with no pictures or anything showing that it was weighed on a certified scale that you wouldn't be saying something about it. I think all Glenn is saying is simple and expected by most growers, if your going to claim any kind of record all you need is documentation, is that so hard to ask even from the people who are honest?

Brooks, Pap started the post as a way of acknowledging Alan's accomplishment. Verifying the weight can easily be done without questioning someone's integrity.

i,m with glenn. We moved heaven and earth to get it as official as possible without any gpc present. I think this should be done by everybody else. Without questioning mr reynolds integrity at all, i think a seasoned growers knows what should be done to make it offical. Or do i only need to post it on bp next year if we would break our own record? would sure save us some money......

Congratulations Alan!!!
I'm going to agree with Glenn on this one. No one is questioning Alan's integrity. But as a GPC rep I must maintain that these records are meaningless without proper documentation.
Lets get this Florida pumpkin thing authenticated once & for all. It's starting to sound like "Jill" from NJ who grew a thousand pounder but didn't want publicity.
I badgered Alan mercilessly last year for stats & pictures of the 2007 FL record. Not that I was questioning the authenticity but rather to make sure no one else would.
These fruit cannot be considered official until the standards are met.

I also agree with Glen on this one, He mearly asked to have some confirmed details on the pumpkin. A couple pics and a bit of info isn't too much to ask, especially when claiming a state record. Eddy

I have to Agree with Glenn. I thought that this is what the GPC has been trying to do, set standards and rules across the board, the same for everyone, right? I didn't see Glenn questioning anyones intergrity here. By now we all know that we need documentation or the fruit is either est. or UOW.

Good news.
Alan had to set up his own "weigh-off" since there is currently no such thing in FL. Needless to say there are no GPC events in FL.
WASN news filmed the weighing but didn't air it. Alan is still hoping to obtain a copy of the event. He has already sent film & a copy of the signed certified (digital) scale printout to Ron Wallace. Hopefully Ron will make digitals from the prints so we can all gawk at them here on BP.
If Alan & other Floridians can garner enough interest in growing maybe we'll see a GPC weigh-off in FL some day.

As long as there is a certified scale, someone to check the fruit and witnesses, it doesnt have to be a GPC event tp be weighed.

when i posted alans accomplishment i never expected to see this much discussion. i was told by a good source that he had tv cameras there at the time it was weighed and, it was also on channell 2 in florida. in any event the posting was a congrats to a good friend not an official notification of anything. alan is not realy concerned about recognition or fame for that matter. personally i dont think he cares one way or the other who acknowledges the record. i know i dont. pap
