When a plant starts to tip does that mean it is vining? It is happening to normal pumpkins.

Use crossed sticks such as bamboo tomato stakes to ease them down gently & where you need them to land.

How long do you wait before helping the plant lay over?

It should start going over after a foot, and by two feet of vine it should be down. I had one do chinups (it latched onto stuff that held the plastic over it and hung in space) but it decided to lay down about 2'. Coax it after 2'...very gently... using the stakes...

When I was first using bamboo to bring the vine down, I broke my husbands vine in half. I found when I used a wet shirt on the vine, the weight of the water brought it down gently and protected it from my high winds. This is my favorite way to bring the vines down. After they are down then I use the bamboo. For some reason my plants do not wilt when the main has a water drinched shirt over it.
