I am new to growing pumpkins, and I have already transplated mine to the patch. but I am starting to wonder if I am wasting my time. I bought my seeds from P and P seed company before I found this site and I bought the "Dills Atlantic Giant 400lb" variety they all seem to be doing good, I would honestly be happy with a 100lb pumpkin, being my first year and all, I am just wondering if anyone has had any experience with the 400lb variety from p and p seed company?

P and P has some really good seeds. www.seedoutlet.com, www.hollandsgiants.com also have really good seeds, & www.howarddill.com. You can also just ask here and someone will offer you seeds for free. I'm in my 2nd year, I had one weigh 100 last year, this year I'm aiming for 500.

I just had some seeds sent to me today for free. I wish I had some as I am really new at this too. You should just look around on the site and keep asking...Oh and I also have the Dills Atlantic Giant 400lb. I transplanted around 2 months ago and they are just growing wild in my garden. I dont have any pumpkins yet but Im seeing alot of male buds. It seems to me that the vine is really healthy and ready to start producing. So to awnser your question so far so good. Let me know how it goes.

No there about half that size. I am really new to this to and I didnt plant them in a garden by them selfs. I now relise that I should have and Im preparing a new area for the new patch. The current vine is growing about 3-4 inches a day but I think if it was by it self that it would have gotton even bigger. I think I'll try to upload some picts. Ill send you a link also. I would love to see your picts also. Its good to talk to new growers because some of the lingo that others use is complicated to me. I kinda wish there was a glossery of terms in here. For me I try to keep things as simple as possible. I love growing vegetables(Specially Pumpkins) but I started this one for my son. We have a lot of fun durring Oct. going to the pumpkin patch and getting pumpkins for each one of us. Thanks for all the replys, everyone! I have another question though, does anyone know if I were to start more seeds next week would I be to far behind? my generic seeds I started around April 15th and have been in the ground for 3 days, it looks like some of you awesome pumpkin growers from bigpumpkins.com are going to send me some good seeds so I don't want to waste them if I plant to late??

Silentb, about 10 years ago I bought some generic seeds from the Dills. I had one plant that endured through heat, drought and neglect and by itself made it to 110lbs. I wish I had that seed again. You should be fine.

Yes you should do just fine with those seeds. Last season I used generic "Dills Atlantic Giant" off the shelf seeds from wal mart or some place like that, grew 2 plants, I got 1 at 155 lbs, and another at 125 lbs. This was with very little soil enrichements and very small plants, and up north in Manitoba, Canada. I am doing lots different this year though..........good seeds, and better soil.

I would like to thank everyone for all there input, I would also like to thank all the people who are sending some good quality seeds my way, I have room for a few more plants (lucky to live in the country)hopefully next year I can return the favor, so I plan on using some of the seeds I get from you other growers out there, thanks again to everyone, it's only my first year and my plant are still tiny but I already love this stuff, my wife thinks i'm a little off, thats probly normal?

Last year was my 1st w/AGs.
I had major probs w/germination, I think lack of heat was the prob.
I used generic AG seeds from lowes. I went thru a few packets due to rot.
I got a few over 100# on various plants including 7 around 100 on 1 Big Max plant.
My biggest AGs were 268# and 122# on the same generic plant. Wish I'd kept 1 on the plant.
Picked up some great seeds from the N.H.GPGA at their seed swap.
Started 13 of them 5/4.
Nothing to report yet.

SB, my first year I also used the type of seeds you have. The seeds did not get planted until the end of May, but I still ended up with a 231 est. pumpkin. You have plenty of time to re-plant if you need to. Good luck and grow'em big.

Hey guys thanks for all the experiance, I am alittle concernd about my newlly transplated plants, they all have there 1st tru leaf on and the 2nd coming along, but they seem to be really up and down one part of the day they will be pretty much laying on the ground and after I water them good they seem to perk up pretty good but the next day its the same deal, did I maybe not harden them off good enough I left them outside for 2 days and 2 nights on there own before transplanting and before that they were out on my screened in porch for about 3 days and nights which is pretty much the same temp. as outside just not as much wind to deal with, the color of the leaves looks fine they are nice and green just very week in the mornings in there new soil, any suggestions? oh I transplated them on the 4th of may if that helps any

Im not sure of the weather but as for me in southern az, when my patch did that I knew it was getting to much sun. I had to built a sun shade. It means there basically doing that because either the weather isnt right for them or durring the time they seem to droop they do that to make up for something. Because of the extreme heat I have here(the sun is soooo hot) im also misting them!!! I feel like there my kids. But now that im doing that they are growing by the hour. I hope that will kinda help. Just look to see whats not right when they seem to wilt.

Oh and you probably need to water them a little more,specially if they make a come back after they get a drink.
