Probably two dumb questions for veteran growers, but here they are.

1) What does it mean to "cull" a pumpkin and how do you do it?

2) When the pumpkin starts to grow, do I need to cut the roots around the stem so that the stem doesn't break?

sorry, but it just seems a little odd to me, or are you building a glossary of terms for your site?

No, I am not trying to build a glossary of terms for my site. I am a second year grower, and I am just trying to learn.

I understand that trying to make a profit from this hobby is a sore subject to many. I am not looking to quit my job from this. I see it as an opportunity to make a little extra spending cash for my family and I.

I understand that respectable growers like yourself, Ron & Pap Wallace, Joe Pukos, Joe Jutras, and many more, are always more than willing to give top notch seeds away for the cost of a Bubble Mailer. I plan on returning the favor to the growers that have sent me seeds, and I also plan on donating some of my seeds, from future pumpkins, to pumpkin clubs and organizations.

to cull means to cut from the plant smaller pumpkins of size so that the main focus of the energy of the plant goes towards the pumpkin that you want the biggest. And for cutting the roots i never have but i am in the same boat as you being this my second year growing maybe some veterans can chip in some advise

The roots that grow down under each leaf node on the main vine (or whatever vine the fruit is on) has to be cut on either side of the pumpkin to allow the vine to rise with the growth of the pumpkin. If not it may snap off at the stem.
