Michigan Zone 5b

Hi all...

New to this site, I was just wondering if i could get any suggestions as to which variety to grow to get some big pumpkins here in Zone 5b.

I've grown some pumpkins before, and alot of winter squash, but i've never had any varieties that were capable of reaching those monster sizes i see all of you getting.

Could anyone suggest which varieties i could try growing next season.. and point me to a source where i could obtain a few seeds.

Thank you for any help... i'm sure i'll be learning alot from this forumn.

Welcome to the madness. Run while you still can. Just click on Seed Exchange just below the New Grower Forum you will find a bunch of offers there for free seeds. Any seed there has the potential to grow you a pumpkin bigger than your wildest dreams.

Think i'll stick around, can't get any crazier that being senile.
I have noticed the seed exchange, i just thought maybe i should have some idea which monster pumpkin i should be looking for first.

Besides, being new here i wouldn't want anyone to think i was just looking for some free seeds. I want something i can grow out and impress the heck outta my friends and neighbors with. I got 3 acres of garden space to play with.

I can see i've got tons of reading to do, this site is just so loaded with usefull info. Wish i could have found this site when i was about 20 years younger.

90% of the seeds are free. You could join a Growers Association, the have very nice seed packets that come with membership. Same Assocoations have seed auction thur the winter months. There are a few sites you can buy seeds like seedoutlet.com & Howard Dills Site. It's been said many time on this site, "the best seeds are free seeds".

These AG's come on many shades of orange & green and a few colors in between. I like bright orange pumpkins with good shape, so that's the seeds I grow. But that's a personal choice.
Try and get your patch prep dione this fall, and a soil test would help with that.

I will be getting a good patch prepped..as much as i can before it freezes solid for the winter. I kinda like brite orange ones too..

I'll take a look around in the exchange after i've read a few more threads here and there to learn more about what i'm doing.

I've only gotten about 50 lb pumpkins in the past, so i got alot of learning to do yet. Been gardening all my life, but haven't spent alot of time with pumpkins.

I'd love to learn more about the MGPG. I can't get around so well though since i don't drive. Not supposed to cause of a disability... not that i don't know how.

I'm down in lower SE section of Mich. about 26 miles northeast of Detroit.
