this is the time of year that can make or break your 2008 season.
how so?
in the spring often times the soil is to wet and cold to accomplish much of anything. in fact some springs are so wet and cold that it can be impossible to even get the soil tilled much less ammended
what to do?
get er done now. dont wait. test the soil - add your organic matter, humic acid,lime, til , etc,as indicated.
whatever you are going to do for prep, do it now.
in spring you can roll out of bed,do a light tilling , set out the plant covers and your in the race

Very good Info pap.....Now I will put compost in the soil...and then in the spring some horse manure...is this ok or should I put everything now in the patch?
I have not a very good soil now...because this year my pach was a corn field.....so I think I have a lot to do now...and I am in the middle of my prep work!

chris, cant put manure in spring,,, it will burn the plant,,, get a soil test, and put in now.

My neighbour put the manure this year in spring too...and he made the new Austrian record.....but I will hear at you...sould I put the manure in now or in the spring?

Chris,
It totally depends on the manure you use. Is it already composted, partially composted or is it fresh. It's the fresh or patially composted manure that will burn your plants. Also if you add composted manure to your patch early (at least three weeks prior to planting, just to be safe) you shouldn't have any problems. This year we added some partially composted cow manure to our garden about a month before planting and we didn't have any problems with burning whatsoever. Good luck!!

Hi Pap,
Well, according to the posts above, you are "DA MAN" to talk to. I am a newbie, very newbie, so I am looking for the basics, very basics.
Question 1: Looks like I need to "test the soil" from the above posts. How? For What? and I guess the answer to When? is Now. I am in Delaware, I think zone 7. How will this affect me?
