ive been just laying a large black contractors trash bag over my pumpkin to block the sun. was wondering if anybody thinks this is a bad thing to do?

I wouldnt do that if I was you personally. Way to much heat and possible burns. Just get some cheap white sheets from the dollar store. You can just place the sheet on the pumpkin or take 4 cheap bamboo poles and stake them around the pumpkin andd secure them with zip ties.

since black attracts the sun, i would not use them, i cut up big old white-shirts and lay them over for now.

I have been growing or trying to grow giant pumpkins now for almost 4 years. I was wondering, in many of the pictures I have seen, the pumpkins are covered (tented).
Exactly what is the purpose of this and why is it done?
I understand it has to do with protecting it, but is there any other benefits? If there are, what are they? My next door neighbor asked why I covered it with my tent shaped covering, and I didn't know what to tell her except that I saw it done. I would really like to have a better answer for myself and to give to anyone else who may ask.
