My vines look great with loads of male flowers. I still have no females. Maybe I don't know what exactly to look for. I have seen a few pix and read that I should see a small pumpkin at the base of the flower. I have not seen this on any flowers.
Do females typically take longer to show up on the vines?
Does anyone have a really close up pix of a female? Maybe I have them and don't know it.
Thanxs a bundle, the seasons a wastin' and I don't even have a first fruit, boohoo

Females do arrive after males. When were your plants started? How long is the main vine?
Ideally you would have seen females forming on the main vine in mid-June around 10-14' out on the vine.

These pumpkings are in my 10 yr olds garden. He did not plant the seeds until June 15,I know that's way too late for a Halloween harvest but it was unavoidable. We are considering this as an experimental year. His vines are only about 3 feet long. No wonder we have no females yet. The vines are loaded daily with fresh males.I guess we just have to patient for females. We use the Neptune's fish and seaweed fert. once a week and follow the package directions. I have worried about heat and sun. We are getting ready to use window screens. There is a man that lives just south of us that was in the newspaper for his pumpkin that is already at 400 lbs. The Fl heat gets really bad but if his can make it.... I actually worry more about all the rain we are getting. That's a problem I can't fix.
Sorry so long, Thanks for all the help, we need it

HI FARMER, ANOTHER THING YOU CAN TRY IS ADD SOME PHOS. IT PROMOTES FLOWERS AND ROOT DEVLOMENT, BEING THAT YOUR PLANT IS ONLY 3 FEET LONG, I HAD THAT PROBLEM EARLY. Frank

Hi farmer, We also got a late start and are about a month behind the others. We started seeing the females after loads of the male flowers started showing. our plants are just now getting to the 12' mark and we are seeing alot of the female flowers now. We planted on May 17th and had a slow start due to my stupid mistakes. But I am sure you will see the females in about a week or so. Then look out. You might try to contact the man to the south, these pumpkin growers are a very helpful bunch and he might be able to give you some pointers to keep you going. This is a great site and these are some very smart people also and Im sure you will get the answers one way or the other. Take some digital pictures and upload them onto your "growers diary", it helps the more seasoned growers to determine what could be any problems.

With your season in florida..you are right on schedule for Halloween. Your plant is only 45 days old give it 2 more weeks. The Males come first to act like a billboard sign to draw the bees. Then you will have plenty of females. In wisconsin we have to worry about frost beginning in september.
