When do you start to remove the leaves and vines around the pumpkin once it has started growing?

I do it as soon as i see the little pumpkin, but BE CAREFUL i snapped one little pumpkin off tonight. I take only the one leaf right by the pumpkin, the vine and the tendril

I try and do it when there's a chance that the leaf or stem can scratch the pumpkin. Watch out for wind. Sometimes I'll use a bamboo stick to brace the the leaf stem away from the fruit. When the fruit grows to close to it, I cut it off.
