i have understood the christmas tree pattern, but what is the flag pattern for laying out a plant?

so your basically telling me that secondary vines are only grown on 1 side of the main until a pumpkin is set on the main, then 1 secondary is grown on the opposite side of other vines? what is the advantage and disadvantages of this pattern? just thinking about what i could do next year to get 2 plants into my 16' x 25' patch.

16 x 25 is a little tight for ONE plant. I can't see the flag pattern helping your situation much.
You could start TWO plants (each at opposite ends) provided you have the heart to rip the lesser plant out when the time comes.
