'Plug-in hybrid vehicles are not electric cars and claims that, in cities, plug-in hybrids have zero emissions are just mischievous, misleading marketing,' said Transport and Environment's UK director, Greg Arche

'Unless the battery is frequently charged, these fake electric cars are actually worse for the climate than conventional cars.'

Plug-in hybrid electric cars can use four times more fuel than makers claim, costing owners an average of £462 per year more than expected, Which? has warned.

The consumer watchdog tested 22 popular hybrid models over 62 miles (100km) and found that they had all been advertised with unrealistic fuel efficiency figures.

On average, hybrid cars were found to be 61 per cent less fuel-efficient than promised.

Hybrids will in the short term make global warming worse unless electricity is sourced from Thorium or solar. (Wind power is not aesthetic and kills birds.) Yes, they will only speed the burning of coal but eventually these cars will have solar panel skins & will charge themselves. All new technologies are wasteful at first... they cant be seen as "saving the planet" yet, but in the end they may be better.

Lots of BMWs and Mercedes on that list, lol.

I don't have a plug-in, just a regular prius hybrid. It's a 2011 that I bought new and I've run it up to about 214,000 miles. Still gets around 50mpg in the summer, and around 40mpg in the snow. Other than the evap canister, haven't had any real fixes on it. Starting to burn a little oil, so I'm planning on trading it in this spring once the salt is off the road. Probably going to get another prius, a used one this time.

This makes sense. The last time I was shopping for a vehicle, I looked at plug in hybrids. Other than the Volt, a lot of them seemed to get all electric range that was not particularly useful. Our next car is probably going to be a pure EV for metro driving, but will keep a conventional car for the longer trips.

We have a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and honestly it is one of the best vehicles we have ever owned.

Gas mileage is incredible.
