I do in the immediate area of the planting hole. It's way to expensive to hit the whole 1000 sq. ft. Good ole horse manure and straw is alot cheeper and amply abundant...

gads, we have a farmers co-op and get the 3cu.ft.bags of perlite and vermiculite for under 5 bucks a bag it's still not free but better than $2.50 for those little bags at walmart

I wish we had a WalMart here randy! Pappy, try to maintain about a 10% 0rganic content in your growing medium. In my main root ball area I like nice loose soil with lots of vermiculite, peat moss, and perlite for around 3x3x3....
