i understand the need for constant moisture with no peaks or valleys in moisture content of the ground but it seems a soaker hose would encourage mildew among other bad situations .is this not the case?

We have had no problems with our soaker hoses and use them with the e-z flow fertilizer injector to apply ferts and fungal remedies.

Soaker or sprinkler hoses work very well in conjunction with a water soluble fertilizer container in front of a timer. I obtained a timer from Lowe's and a(don't laugh) Miracle Grow container with water hook-ups from Wal-Mart. On days without rain, I generally water for 6 hours. The fertilizer of your choice is easily injected. Cheap and effective. Pumpkindude1
