My local supplier has kelp meal for 38.50 for a 50 pound bag. Very tempting but I have a large patch so the price could add up quickly. I'm wondering if it's worth it and if so, how much should I add per thousand square feet.
Thanks,
Joel

You can steep that in water and use it as a foliar. 50# could last you a verryy long time.

I have been putting kelp meal in the ground at the rate of twenty five pounds per 1000 sq. feet. That is the suggested application by the Fertrell Company. Jerry Rose reported recently that he uses fifty pounds per plant. That is as heavy as I have heard reported. This is in addition to foliar applications applied weekly with fish and molasses.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess what I'm really asking is, how important would you consider this stuff in your overall fertility program? Assuming that I'll be adding fertilizer, fish/kelp, mollases, azomite etc., should I bother with the kelp meal? Would you consider it a "must have" item?

For $38.50 per 50 lb bag you should definitely incorporate some into your patch each year. Dwaine is right with about 25 lbs per year/per 1000 square feet or you could go with Mr. Pukos and go for about 8 lbs per planting site in a circle from where the stump will be. Makes good sense to me and in any case it make your garden smell great and if you are not near the ocean at least it smells that way. We just spread about 25 lbs onto our patch today and watered in some molasses and fish to give everthing a kick start. Go for the kelp meal and you will see results.

If I had to take stuff away from my program the kelp would be the last I would want to give up. Without all the gorey details it supports excelent plant condition that enables resistance to some insects and fungus attack while containing a natural growth booster. Then even more as you consider the fertilizer values and trace minerals. This is a great from the sea product that helps us in many ways.

I'm still waiting for the bear to dig a hole looking for the fish....but it has never happened. I do have black bears in the neighborhood. They caught and relocated three dandies just last week. Twentyfive years ago we had no bear. Today we have an excess of bears.
