Been there. Fertility is certainly a part of the issue. Either there are no nutrients or the woodchips/organics are gobbling the available nutrients. Here is one that shows classic nitrogen or magnesium deficiency. The plant has pulled the nutrients out of the older leaf.

http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=303840 This area was fertilized but maybe nitrogen volatized or was consumed by the organics. (So add more right??) Hope this helps!

The problem with the "brown" (woody dead carbon) part of your compost is you can end up fighting it all season. Its just an endless sink for nutrients its equivalent to having tree roots actively removing nutrients. In the long run it feeds the soil but in the short term it really makes it harder to keep up with the plant's needs. My guess is that this is a big problem for new gardeners. Many bagged products from the big stores may have too much sawdust or peat so the nutrients soon become unavailable. Its been a hard concept for me to fully understand and appreciate. These materials will help proportional to the soils ability to break them down... Some can be good... But having any amount of excess browns in excess of the soil's decomposition rate just doesnt help.
...Advice coming straight from the "king of excess hay" himself, lol.

Don't listen to this poor advice, or gibberish. There is a huge difference between compost and raw material that has not been composted yet. Chlorosis can be caused by Soil PH, Soil Temperature, Deficiency or Toxicity can also cause Chlorosis. Lack of aeration in the soil also causes. Soil is a science not an uneducated guess as to what you believe is happening. Everyone has told you what you are doing wrong, but you insist on pouring water uphill. Then draw attention towards yourself, as to having a problem.
