I’ve seen some pretty goofy claims and hypothesis regarding fertilizer, fertility, NPK values and the use of certain organic materials as your base fertilizer.

First off, without a soil test to determine what your soil needs, adding any kind of amendments or fertilizer will not result in a balanced soil, or a properly and balanced pumpkin plant, no matter what you keep telling yourself and selling to everyone else that will listen.

Here is a link to NPK values of organic amendments.

NEW GROWERS, please find a mentor in your area that you can bounce ideas off and do not rely on some of the diaries that you see on this site that have hundreds and hundreds of entries. While there are many awesome diaries by incredible growers, there are also some that simply don’t know what they are doing but somehow what you to follow the madness that they are “trying”.

Neither have I, but I have had the OPPOSITE result, lol---
I definitely agree that without knowing what the soil has or needs, it is even MORE of a craps shoot...on a losing night---eg

Well said North Shore,,,,, very well said.

The key word I picked up on was " GOOD MENTOR " very, very important,,,, if not the most important thing you can do.

There is so much to take away from bp.com but a lot of stuff I run by my mentor and they just shake their head.

Good on you putting that out there north shore!

I have basically the best looking plants of anyone on bp and yet you are directing negative comments at me i presume... How ironic. Love the irony.

Whatever. Some of what I do works. Some doesnt. Its a diary... not a Joel Holland video. Man I wish you guys knew how to chill out.

I have certain limitations but those limitations aside, I'm doing great.

New growers... Dont get in over your head. I am on various possibly futile quixotic quests... My diary is what I am doing. I am simply sharing what I am doing. PB last year 795.5. Not great. This year... Who knows. Its my diary. Its not a how to guide for anyone else. Except blossom down growing... Ive tried to present some how-to ideas on that... But yeah PB 795.5 not great... making a basic soil balancing effort and doing everything by the book commonly gets growers into the 1200-1400 lb range. If youre getting 1500+ you probably really know what you are doing.

North shore is correct: I dont have a full grasp on pumpkin growing.

Rmen way to make me eat my words! Nice plants.

North Shore I trust I will be allowed to post whatever I want once I reach 1200 or 1500... If I never reach those numbers you will have every right to call me a fool.

Buzzkill emailed me so I gotta be nice...let’s see if this is “basically” being nice....making a good soil balancing effort and doing everything by the book will get you into the 2000’s If you live in the sunbelt ...but yer reading some crazy ass haybale book, not “the book”...I know you’ve read “the book”..even I’ve read “the book”...I don’t remember any hay....If your growing over 1500lbs, it’s not necessarily that you know what yer doing , it’s that you know what others are doing..trying to replicate the things that work...I dunno...don’t care..just rambling..makes me think of that line in that movie tommy boy buzzkill...you could get a good look at a tbone by sticking yer head up a bulls ass, but wouldn’t you rather take the butchers advice?...

I'm totally lost,,,, I think he's just talking about posts in general on bp. A lot of the newer guys post funny stuff that doesn't make any sense and he's referring to them?

I think your plants look pretty good!

Keep at the hard work!!
