Well I think i finally got a hold on growing watermellons
about a month ago i had nothing but small ones that kept falling off after doing some re search over these pages and doing some trial and error of hand pollination i finally have a GOOD one set and its growing FAST and is currently the size of an Large Orange I know its late in the year but am hopeing to get ONE good eatter yet On the tage it claims 75-85 days till majourity but mine has been growing for about a month now and its a good size what would you suggest i use for fertilizer ? currently ive been useing ( monthly) Blood meal ( entire garden putting on light) and every 2 weeks ive been putting a tad of tomatoe 12-15-15 fertilizer onto my mellons and its seems to be working says its for fruit plants so i dont see why it wouldnt work

whats suggested right now i'm in the learning stage so please help

I gave mines just Kelp, or soluble seaweed powder in the normal dosis every fourth day.

Spain is better to grow melons than Canada. Nice ones Carlos!! To help you Dave, I would go to a reputable garden center and get their opinion for your area or contact your loco, (LOL) local extention agent and hear what he (or she) says. Personally I would cut back on nitrogen. You are trying to feed the fruit now so you should use what the fruit is hankerin' for.

So. Maine

Dave, are you growing regular watermelons or giant watermelons. Here in So. Maine I have 5 giant watermelons growing with the largest being 20 inches long , about the size of a fully grown normal watermelon that you would buy in a supermarket and they are putting on the size pretty good right now. I found the plants very slow growers here in Maine, though we did have a cool wet spring and start to summer and way too much rainfall at once when it did rain. I was also told by the person I got the seeds from ( In Washington State ) not to expect to eat it after picking as mine are only 2 weeks away from picking and will not be mature enough to eat. He said it will be white inside when I pick it around the end of September. The seeds were from a 200 pounder but I'll be lucky to reach 40 lbs. with only 2 weeks left. Al

Dave,Just like Pumpkins are not suitable for southern regions, neither are watermelons for you northern growers. Grow the biggest you can though, and be proud of your achievement!!

Dave,I fertilize my melons at 1/4 that of pumpkins but apply once aweek or less.Use 20-20-20 through august then switch to higher potash ratio.Bury all vines and limit plant growth to 6 to 8 runners 12 to 15 feet long.Good luck I grew a 183 in the north.
