i plan to start making my own liquid fish / seaweed fertilizer. how should i do this to keep flies away and smell to a minamum? how long does it need to compost?

Whew! It may be more convient to just buy it Mr. T...you can get 1 quart concentrated "Alaska" brand at Lowe's hardware (you have those there?) for $5.
Lot's of other places on the Internet, pretty easy to find, probably safer than making your own. Be careful not to over-concentrate.

I mix up my own "tea" in 55 gallon plastic trash containers. I use a old pair of nylons fill it with cow/horse manure, add concentrated seaweed and fish emulsion, put the lid on tight and allow it to steep for a couple weeks, then side dress the vines with it. Warning keep the 55 gal drum away from, and down wind of the house!
