Since it seems that most of a pumpkins growth is at night. Whats everyones thought on watering thru drip at night. Just a thought????

I think watering at night increases chance of powdery mildew and other problems.

We apply all most of our water through T-Tape in the evening. because you are not getting any moisture on the leaves, it has no impact on Powdery Mildew. Also, the water does not evaporate and is more efficient this way.

We also apply water with overhead sprinklers and misters. This should be done early enough in the day to be sure the leaves are dry by nightfall.

The only exception I do is with compost tea...this I apply in the evening and often the leaves are wet at dusk. I have found no PM issues with this method and my theory is the more of the nutrients in the tea will be absorbed through the open stomata in the evening.

I agree with John, I water a lot at night with a soaker hose. Never caused me any mildew problems and like John said, it does not evaporate.

Dwight, I just read some old posts and Andy Wolf used a gravity feed and let it drip overnight. Im sure Andy would give you some advise, give him and email.

I originally had problems with watering at night because I was using lawn sprinklers (my vines are on lawn). I thought that contributed to powdery mildew last year (my first year growing a pumpkin). Now I do most watering by hand (in morning) but plants get a light sprinkling with lawn in morning. After reading these responses to eastkypumpkin's question I am switching my manual watering of the roots to evening.

I hooked a 55-gal barrel up to drip, and set it about 4 feet off the ground. It was about the best I had at the time, and seemed to work ok, until the barrel fell over.

I'm on a nicer setup now.

I have 4 60 gallon barrel hooked together into my drip system...sorta thinkin I will run them next time...after dark!!!! Thanks all!!! Grow em BIG!!! Peace, Wayne
