I've used calcium nitrate in the past but not in the last two or so years. I believe the calcium nitrate worked well and I would like to include it in this year's season, however, I am having a difficult time locating the stuff. I am in the Buffalo , NY area. If anyone could help me with any ideas where to get it, I would appreciate it. In fact, if anyone has any suggestions with a good replacement, that would work as well. thanks! Brian

How about a combination of gypsum and urea? Just remember that urea is 46% nitrogen. Calcium nitrate is 15.5% N and 19.5% calcium.

I used ebay, turned out the guy who sold it lived 30 miles from me, I drove to his house and picked it up.

If you want to take a trip across the border to canada, you shoul be able to get it at the Vineland Co-op in Vineland ON. Vineland is about 30 minutes from Niagara falls

Here are two more options:

Small amounts

Larger amounts

I have not used either one, but I am thinking of getting the stuff from clanorchids for early sesaon growth

Keep in mind folks that the reason for using calcium nitrate is not just to get some Calcium with your nitrogen. Calcium Nitrate is avery fast release and highly available source of Nitrogen. The Calcium component is just a bonus. The ammount of Ca you are getting from adding a few pounds of CN is negligable.

The only thing faster than Calcium Nitrate is Nitrate of Soda a.k.a. Sodium Nitrate....very hot stuff.

I worked for many years in the vegetable industry and most growers used CN for a quick responce when they needed N fast

Products like Ammonium Sulfate are slightly slower release making it more desirable in my books. Slow and steady wins the race.

Also keep in mind that calcium Nitrate sticks around for about 3-4 weeks max, depending on soil temperatures and weather conditions. I have heard about growers putting CN on the first of May. By mid June it is all gone anyway. I would suggest that half as much applied at the end of May would be better

Thanks everybody for your help! I have actually located a mill about 20 miles from my home which deals with it. Thanks again! Good luck with the new season!

what if you were to put calcium nitrate and sodium nitrate on at the same time? would the sodium nitrate kick in when the calcium nitrate stops in 3-4 weeks?
