If you take humic acid and dry it down to form a black mass that can be crushed and sized by dry sieving, you have humate. In other words, humate is humic acid in its solid state. Therefore, the chemical properties of humate and humic acid are basically the same.

Liquid humic acid will have the more immediate benefit upon application, while the dry form will slowly break down and potentially render those humic and fulvic acids over a longer period of time.
In either form one is wise to directly introduce this substance into a soil medium. It serves as a catalyst to update of minerals and the exchange of gasses and ionic nutrients between the roots and the soil medium.
