Have your high and low temperatures and rain been just as eratic? I've seen the same type of thing with my pumpkin for the last 3 weeks. It has usually been due to weather conditions but a couple of times I saw growth spurts that I couldn't connect to anything. If you are still having 20+ pound days at this point of the season I would take it and be happy. ;-)

HEck we never got 25 pounds in a day, and now i am happy with just 2-3 pounds.
AS far as chemical fert over dose. Yes i quite fert and noticed that i still get growth just less but more steady.

Prin Does it spike up shortly after fertilizing and then trail off after a couple of days? Maybe the soil is tired and empty and applying ferts spikes the growth? I don't think the plant responds differently to chemical ferts verses organic. I don't think the plant knows the diff truthfully. I have observed my growth drop off this time of year... one day 20lbs., next day 6 lbs. It's the 10 day average that I pay attention to.

I think don is right about the tape. At that weight 1 inch can be the differance between 15lbs and 21lbs.

Measure every day if that is what floats your boat... But look at your growth curve over 5-7 days and it will be alot cleaner line.
