I am growing one plant. I pollinated on 7/4 and the pumpkin is 50 lbs today (7/17). The pumpkin is 20 feet from the root and on the main vine. I want to be sure the pumpkin is getting the correct amount of water and fertilizer for maximum growth.

Water......In the morning before work I give the roots 2 watering cans (about 4 gallons) then I run the occillating sprinkler over the entire plant for about an hour. I give the roots another 2 gallons in the early evening.

Fertilizer..........I am following the feeding schedule in "Giant Pumpkins III". Right now I am in week eleven and using 20-20-20 Miricle grow (foiler spray), Fish Emulsion Drench and Seaweed as both a Foiler Spray and as a Drench.
I fertilize Once a week.

Should I adjust my Watering and/or Fertilizing?

Ok, I think I may need some help here. I water 8 plants with the can (5gal) 3 times in the morning and my wife waters with the hose in the afternoon till the the patch has a pool 2 times and before we go to bed I do the same thing. Is that too much or what. It seems these things will take all you can give! Now I just pollinated on the 12th and 13th how big should they be getting everyday since? I mean they have doubled in size for sure. I also fert. every Sat. AM w/ superthrive, fish emulsion, and molassas. Can you think of anything else I should be doing to make them take off? I heard about calcium and phosphate? Where do you get it?Just in my 2nd year doing this.

Think Big

Albo, it depends on your soil. When i was growing in valley stream, the soil was sandy, and i needed alot of water. out here in commack, my soil has a more clay like consistancy, and i water less. dig in the soil (dont go crazy) and see how moist it is. You may be watering too much, or not enough. also, you can measure the amount of water your putting on the plant by placing containers around the patch. if you do a search on this site you can get a more detailed explanation on how to do this.

Bill, went to the home page but couldnt find c&j products but thanks Scott that explains alot. My patch has a lot of sand mixed in with the compost and moo poo. Im new but I definately got the bug!!! I just want a bigger than normal one this year. My wife and I grew just halloween ones for the kids in the neiborhood until last year we accidently grew a big one.

Scott, Just so you know, the plant I'm growing is from your 1249. I met you at Hicks when you had that seminar. My big guy is at estimated wt. of 73 lbs. 15 days after pollination. I'm following the feeding schedule in "Giant Pumpkins III", feeding once a week. I guess as far as watering goes I'll just keep an eye on the pumpkin and also track the weight gains hoping for about 20 lbs/day.
THANKS FOR THE SEEDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
