what would the oyster shells like we feed chickens here do for the calcium in my soil and are there any other good or bad things it would cause

Don't use them. They will raise your pH way up.

The oyster shell is a good way to add calcium to you soil most is at least in the 90% pure cal range-- ours is 97%----BUT remember your soil is like a cake mix to much salt dont serve for dinner---- If ph is to hi 7.1 or higher YES your going to raise your ph --Away study and know your soil and your ammendments for what they can do to your pumpkin dreams----------craig

I found out the hard way raised my ph really high. and it took a while to get the ph down lol.

well mine is at 6.0 im puting 80 pounds to 2000 sf my but how long till will start to work i put down two dump truck loads of compost and was told to wait till jan to put it down ? HELP and thanks

Sand or gravel-based soils are prone to a drop in pH over a year or two. Oyster shell is a good way to maintain a consistent pH as well as provide calcium. If you have any doubts and currently have low pH from year to year, try adding a modest amount and retest the following spring. Oyster shell could be the ticket for maintaining optimum pH.

If you find yourself having to lower pH every year, don't use it.
