I pump water right out of the bay of Quinte (part of lake Ontario) for my patch. I pump it into a 1550 gal holding tank to warm up and then irrigate. This works great but I end up holding water for up to a week sometimes between rains. The green algae is building up in the tank and is always a problem. I posted this problem last winter and it was suggested Hydrogen Peroxide may be a good treatment to help control it as apposed to using chlorine or other algicides. Has anyone had any experiance with this? How much peroxide should I add to the tank? I have the 35% strength product. I found a recomendation for 1 cup/ 250 gals on the internet for shocking pools/ hot tubs, but it stressed that it wouldn't kill algae.
What about copper sulphate? Would the level required to kill the algea be enough to burn the leaves when I irrigate?
I found a rate on the internet recomending 1-2 gm/ 1000L copper sulphate. This works out to 1/4 to 1/2 onces to 1550 gals.

How about Barley Straw? Or Shade the tank to prevent light from coming in.

i had the same problem. Covered the entire tank with blankets so no sunlight can enter and algues are gone now.

I would leave it alone. The green water only means that the water has more nutrients.Probably phosphorous or nitrogen-not a bad thing.

If you have to. Pet supply stores that have fish have stuff for that. I have a koi pond, and use it. I don't know what it will do for pumpkins, but the fish like it. The algea will take the oxygen out of the water, from what I been told. Maybe?

I thought of covering the tank with black plastic but someone told me the water would get too hot!

If covering the tank will work go ahead. Our tanks are covered with black garbage bags over them, to keep out wind blown dead leaves and such.

John, I painted my 1250 gal tank black. Unfortunately we haven't gotten enough rain this summer to worry about using it. I pump from it into my garden barrels and then feed it to the pumpkins.

if you have a water pump and access to electric you can get a UV filter and what it does is kills the algae spores, and other bacteria. thats all that i know about it. maybe some knows a little more about them. i use them in my aquariums they keep the water nice....Ryan
