#1: Check out what VTSteve has written (to YOU!!!)
http://www.bigpumpkins.com/msgboard/ViewThread.asp?b=1&p=547266

#2: Why do you need the seeds "as soon as..."???

#3: How many plants are you planning to grow?

#4: Do you put at least as much effort into patch prep and reading as you put into repeatedly making others aware that you are the one who should receive an email as soon as others have seeds available???

Maybe I´m the only one who has this impression, but to me your redundant requests make a rather annoying appearance, like someone who´s writing an email to all bakeries they should offer him their bread (without any hint at which variety of bread) instead of going into a bakery any checking out what´s available and simply asking for the bread you would like to have.

At least in my humble opinion:
- YOU are the one who is looking for seeds.
- YOU are the one who needs to decide which seeds you want to grow and how many you want to grow.
- YOU are the one who has to find contact details of the growers who have the seeds you want to grow.
- YOU are the one who has to contact the growers.
- YOU are the one who has to promise to grow their seeds and to ask for permission to send them a self addressed stamped bubble.

Don´t ask 2000 growers to send emails to you, better find the 3 or 4 growers you want to get your favorite seeds from and send them an email.

I agree. I feel like you want our seeds to put them on eBay. If I thought that was ok, I'd do it myself. And for those that don't know.... It isn't ok. I send the new seeds from each year to almost anyone who asks in the right way. But you are very clear that all of the cool seeds growers have sent you ended up with no luck. So are you having trouble learning how to grow or are you not growing at all?

Farming- a bunch of catastrophies that result in a lifestyle

IF I agree to send you some, I want to know what YOUR going to do with them. Are you growing them, re-selling them? You rarely answer our questions to these multiple requests.
Pumpkin seed etiquette:
This is what I want to see in your seed request:
1. Figure out what AG you want to grow.
2. Research who has the seed you want.
3. POLITELY send them an email:
a. Ask if they will be offering the seeds.
b. Tell them if you will be growing them, and WHAT YEAR you will be growing them in.
c. Give them some relevant information such as patch size, what other AG's you will be growing, what steps you have taken to prepare to grow them.
d. WAIT for a reply. If I say yes, and you hound the hell out of me, I can guarantee your not getting anything.
We all started out with nothing genetically speaking. It's on YOU, the NEW GROWER, to put forth the effort to obtain decent genetics. I have gotten seeds from each and every person I ever requested a seed from. This community is outstanding in supporting new growers in not only seeds, but advice, and knowledge as well. Don't be the dick that takes advantage of that, it won't get you anywhere.

A ? For lb I planted 7 different types of seeds I have received I planted them June 1st they were at least a month old seedling why is it that it didn't set until around August the beginning the pumpkins grew softball size that set early and rotted became mush until August I notice one vine out of all 7 plants produced one and I see it took its started getting bigger..

Although I´m not KC Kevin, I guess that "WOW" stands for "WOndering Why", because I can´t believe that you found out how to use BP for posting in the Seed Exchange section, but you find it a little complicated to use the other features (such as posting in the probably more helpful sections such as General Discussion, New Growers Forum etc. or creating a grower diary where you could post some pics of your plants and pics of the problems you encountered with the plants).

Currently, from what you have written above, I guess that your problems didn´t come from the seeds but from other things such as special environmental variables.

For seeds: If you simply look for some great genetics (no matter if the produce orange or yellow or pink fruit), then better wait for another 1 or 2 months, then you will find offers here in the seed exchange section. No need for asking for seeds here in the section again and again.
For other helpful info (the more important part), you better spend a couple of minutes for finding out how to create a grower diary, how to post messages in the other sections of the message board and if you could locate other growers in your area...catching up with other growers, having them visit your patch etc. etc. would probably be the best thing that could happen to you for efficient patch prep and development of strategies for a much more successful pumpkin season next year.

9/9/2015 6:12:11 AM

Pumpking

Germany

Hm, new info, great:

- Start seeds last week of April.
- Transplant them as soon as you can see the first true leaf (and make sure the soil in your patch is warm enough by that time, or transplant them into a much bigger pot...examples are shown in my 2013 diary...and get them into the patch 1 or 2 weeks later).

You shouldn´t try to keep a seedling in a pot for 1 month.

You see the link I had posted? Here it is again.

Select the link, then either copy it into the address line of your internet browser or right-click and open in a new window. It brings you to a post you had written a couple days earlier, and right after your message you can find a message from VTSteve, which also contains the line "Sometime in late October or in November, growers will offer seeds on this message board."

...but for your convenience, here it is again:

You should start BP using "www.bigpumpkins.com" (or simply click on the "HOME" button in the top right corner). On the title screen of BigPumpkins you can find the section "Grower Diaries" in the menu in the top left corner.

Also, in the HOME main manu you find the section "Message Board", click on that link and you will see all sections available on the message board (where "Seed Exchange" is just one of them).

Click into the "General Discussion" section and you could, for example, post a message if you are looking for other growers in your area. Click into the "New Growers Forum" section and ask all sorts of pumpkin related questions you might consider newbie questions, and there will be many growers friendly and helpful enough to answer your questions in a friendly and easy manner, taking into account that you are a newbie.

...lools like you had googled something like "giant pumpkin seeds" and you had been directed into the Seed Exchange, without knowing which big web site with so many opportunities is behind this little gadget.

Now go ahead and find out about the bigger world you have discovered today :-)

In a couple of days or weeks it won´t be a problem to you to get answers on your pumpkin related questions and to get in touch with other growers.

Cocuzza, your not allowed to explode from excitement before all your seeds come in. :)
Over the winter, once you have your seeds, list them all out and post them here, in 'AG genetics' section. Lots of people here can help you choice as they know so much about the genetics behind all these great seeds.

Hollandsgiants.com has a fertilizer program you can look at for nutrients and when to feed plant.

First of all you need a soil test (pH, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Mn, Fe, Zn, Cu, B, organic matter), you need to know what´s available and what is missing.

9/11/2015 2:40:12 AM

Pumpking

Germany

With reference to your diary entry (you mentioned 4 acres), what you need (after a soil test) is good patch prep (of a maybe 2000 - 3000 sqft area), maybe 20 seeds (out of 4 - 8 pumpkins), turn them into maybe 12 - 18 seedlings and grow 4 - 6 Atlantic Giant plants (of maybe 600 sqft size each plant) therefrom. This will be enough to keep you busy in the pumpkin patch for 1 - 3 hours every day (as long as you try to get the best out of those plants).

A&L Western Labs, test package "S3C" gives you a good load of info about your soil at a good and reasonable price.

...and the Graphical Soil Analysis Report (example in the top left corner) is what I like most.

In my opinion, you don´t need to spend the additional $$ on recommendations, because you will most likely ask other AG growers for their opinion and their individual recommendations, and many of them will be happy to help you as soon as they see your soil test results.

Did you try to post the results as a graphic in your diary? In the past couple of years some (many) people had encountered difficulties with uploading pics into their diary, it could depend on the computer system you are using. Try it again, and if you can´t upload the pic then you should explain in the General Discussion what you´ve tried and which system (operating system, internet browser etc.) you are using. I´m sure some others had the same problem before and could come up with helpful hints for you.
