hi all. i was wondering, how do you store your seeds? at the moment im just keeping them in a box in the fridge. is this ok? or should i do something else to keep the seeds presearved? thanks!

I've heard that the automatic defrost in today's freezers isn't all that great for seeds.
Now I keep mine in the fridge with silica gel in the baggie.

i have mine in a 3 ring binder with sports card pages, seeds packs fit great in them and its a good way to organize you seeds! hope that helps :)

Nice idea cweibz. I too keep mine in the original small coin paper envelope, and then inside a manila folder. Old baseball card binder would work well. We have too much ice cream and steak in our freezer so that wouldn't work.

I think the best way is to keep them at a constant temperature & humidity level. Frozen in a freezer that does not have a defrost cycle is a good way to achieve this. A dry area with low humidity & constant temperature is another good way to keep the seed from beginning the germination process before you want it to.

Changes in temperature & moisture can trigger germination. Once a seed starts the process the seed is done. The defrost cycle of a freezer raises the temperature of your ice box, so the crystals that have formed from the moisture in your ice box will melt. Constant freezing temperature & low moisture will help insure that your seed will not begin to germinate.

I vacuum pack my seeds in small packages or in different size masson jars. I believe oxygen is a seeds worst enemy. Terry

I think that the freezer will dry them out over an extended period.It certainly does that to food. Mason jars or ammo cases are what I use. Sunlight is bad for seeds as well

here at the gizzwaldo compound we never froze a seed. keep them in a nice old brief case ,in the dark in a cool area of the house.
never had a problem.
ps---when you freeze anything? should you loose electricity for any reason? your seeds could suffer from it.

If oxegen is bad, then does anyone/ has anyone vacuum sealed their seeds? I've got a foodsaver that could be put to good use for sealing them?

Kevin, thats what I use. I just make up small bags and pull a vacuum. I have the unit that you can pull a vacuum on Mason jars, so any large quantity, can be stored that way.I find you have to just slightly open,the small plastic bags they come in, so it pulls the air out of the small bag. It works great! Terry

Freezer kept in ziploc bag inside prescription bottles there doubled sealed. the defrost cycle in a freezer will suck the mositure out of the seeds.If you store them in freezer they need to be in airtight packs.I kept my seeds in the basement in the 90s,none would germ ten years later.Freezer kept will be good for thirty years.
