I had to fill out a customs form to send a seed to Australia. Seemed like no big deal and Ben got the seed okay.

I have filled out the form and said it is "garden supplies". It is the truth but does not raise the flag that it needs to be looked at. Many other countries are this way and I have heard of others who will send them in magazines. If you send them and the package says seeds, it will usually get destroyed or confiscated.

Austria and Australia are completely different requirements. Australia does not care. Many European countries are quite strict.

put the seed in a small bubble.then place that in a regular document size envelope.Put a newsletter on each side of bubble. Then send as a document. You can be totally honest they will destroy it if they know its a seed. You wont go to prison I promise. if you do I will come visit you.lol!

Be careful with australia just from experience they have become more strict over the last year and a half, it is to the point now where we can not send paper mill parts(steel pieces) on a wooden pallet the pallet has to be plastic or metal.
Even though this was started about austria, just a random shipping fact

Australia has very strict rules on seeds as they can bring unwanted diseases and pests into the country. The seeds/packets need to be labeled with the correct biological name (such as Cucurbita Maxima for Ag's) to allow them into the country. Even with the label, there is a high chance that customs will take the seeds to quarantine to be tested. Australia relies a lot on farming and agriculture and we need to make sure no diseases get in and destroy our crops.

Canada is the same way Ben.A bird can eat a seed & fly over the border & drop it in a field. The same thing can happen with fish & bugs. But we cant ship a seed.lol

The customs form is available at the post office the form number I believe is CN-22. Once it is filled out the post office needs to attach and file it. It is not clear in the list if seeds are banned.
The link below is to the list of countries and mailing requirements http://pe.usps.com/cpim/ftp/manuals/imm/full/imm.pdf

Fred it for disease reasons, and evasive species prevention...they dont want to risk transmission and require phytosanitary certificates.
