In follow-up to my previous posting, I am looking to see if anyone recognizes the following seed: 672 Lawrince 07; 423 Gerhardt x Oprn "Dark Orange" (hope I have transcribed the notes from the envelope correctly I received 2 of these seeds from someone and the seeds germinated without help and the plants were healthy, growing at a rapid pace, etc. Just wondering if the person who originally supplied them might be willing to supply more or similar as I feel I have "unfinished business" after my previous plants were destroyed by Mother Nature. Thanks...Scall

If I am reading this right 672 Lawrence is the seed and it was grown from the 423 Gerhardt x open. 423 Gerhardt is a great orange producer but most people will shy away from open pollinations. So you may want to find a different seed than the 672 since it was open pollinated. I have some orange seeds if orange is what you are wanting.

Tim, thanks for the response but since I am new to this "game" I have a few questions/clarifications: a) You are probably right in your "reading" of the notes. I do believe the seeds were as you described based on the notes and further examination. b) What/why is "Orange" all about....I am assuming just color of the fruit. Maybe a preference of some growers.? c) "Open"...again I assume not a controlled pollination of specific plants, so no guarantees of the end product..?
If anyone can further enlighten me, I would be grateful..?
Thanks...Scall (Ian)

The seeds you grew are from the 672 lb Lawrence pumpkin grown in 2007 by Jeff Lawerence. The 672 Lawrence was grown from a 423 Gerhardt seed. The bee's did the pollinating so the cross is described as "open" Had it been a controlled pollinationg the name of the seed that grew the pollinating plant would be listed after the female. Did that make sense?
Orange is just a note from/for whoever wrote that on there. The 423 Gerhardt is a producer of vibrant orange pumpkins so I assume the 672 Lawrence was such a fruit. Meaning there is a good chance the 672 will produce orange fruit. There are some line of seeds that will produce pure green gruit, some will produce mixed colored fruit, others that will produce bright orange/red fruit and some seeds you have little idea of what you're going to get color wise.

Jeff Lawrence does not grow anything in his patch but orange so you would technically be ok with the open pollination. If you want to go direct to the source I can round you up some 423s if you like. Jim Gerhardt

Thanks to everyone for their replies and clarifying where those seeds came from, etc. I really appreciate people taking the time to get back to me. If you see my other post I am looking to get some seeds for this year, so if any of you would be willing to part with a couple, please respond and include an e-mail in your post. I will be in touch a.s.a.p.
Thanks again.....Scall (Ian)

Look who's talking about growing nothing but orange,,,LOL,,,you can also bet that just about everything grown the past 5 years or more has been Orange coming from the Gerhardt patch also. Well, besides his green squash, and it turns orange after midnight. I dont remember ever seeing a ugly tri color mix or whitish color pumpkin coming from Jim's patch, ever,,,ain't that right Jimmy?,,,LOL,, Ugly pumpkins cant grow in this mans soil.
