I suspected a copper deficiency about mid season... So this is one possibility. The pumpkin with the smaller seeds only drew nutrients from the stump, not any of the nutrients I added along the main vine, so there could be differences in the micronutrients that would explain the difference in seed size. Maybe there is a genetic component if the plant is heterozygous (two different genes) for seed size then it can choose which gene to express based on the plant hormones/ environmental conditions. Its possible that subjecting a homozygous plant to the same changes in nutrients or environmental factors would NOT result in a change of the seed size.
Anyhow, its quickly getting beyond the limits of what I am going to figure out.
