I recommend reading seed packets or asking other growers for tips on planting depth. For example, marigolds need a covering of 1/8 to 1/4 inch of soil. Gently pressing down on the soil covering provides soil contact with seed casings. I covered the pots with clear plastic wrap and placed them in my greenhouse and will provide an update next week!
