At long last I am in a state where I can grow a big pumpkin. Believe it or not I actually took pumpkin growing into consideration when I purchased my home. I have also a full acre to work with here in Centennial CO, with no trees or anything to shade the plants. I am considering growing two plants but will defiantly have at lease one. I have done nothing to prepare my patch so I figure this year will be my test run. I am going to gather some soil this weekend - which I should have done long ago - and send it off to get tested. When the snow melts I will till, try to plant a quick cover crop. When I'm ready to put the plants in the patch i will till again, put the pumpkin in hoops, rye outside the hoops and till again before they leave the hoops. I plan on putting the patch near the bottom of the hill, and a LG tank at the top of the hill to warm the water and let it de-chlorinate. If thats even necessary? Any tip-hint-suggestion is always welcome!

Patch got marked out and I did a little raking and tossed out some seeds to get a little cover. Birds seem to love them. Cover crop in the fall :-p. 20'x30' patch. I may do a second plot too as I have the room! Concerned about watering with the tap water... Thinking about putting a 100g tank near the patch to let the water gas off and perhaps warm before watering... Weigh off is Nov 4th, That puts my In ground day April 5th. Start growing the seed 3 weeks before that to give them a good start!

Soil sample is going to ship out to Western Labs tomorrow. Digging in my patch for the first time I noticed that it seems heavy clay. I will see what the soil test says but I figure I will be tilling in a few hundred pounds of soil to loosen it up and adjust to soil wherever it needs to be.

About a week ago I planted my pepper seeds and a few gourd seeds. A few weeks early on them – whoops. However I recently got some Myckos and Azos and really wanted to give them a test. 3 days ago my first seed sprouted – a luffa gourd, today I was checking the incubator and noticed the roots were already peaking out the top of the plug. Impressive! I want to use some of the Advanced Nutrients stuff on the pumpkin, Bubba - when you going to add a shopping page to your site?

Woo Hoo! I got the seeds I have been waiting for. Thanks to the CT club for the auction. So the plan is to grow 2 pumpkin plants and 3 tomato plants. Pumpkin #1 will be the 1738 Barron, which comes from a big family and its orange! Pumpkin #2 will be a seed that the WizzZzZz gave me which is also orange. Not sure if ill grow a BIG BIG pumpkin my rookie year so hoping for a nice orange pumpkin. I will also plant one each of the MacCoy tomato seeds. Wishing I could dig up more tomato specific information… Things are starting to take shape.

I also got a new camera a few weeks ago... I figure the best way to learn is record what I do - maybe i can entertain and help somebody else along the way. You will also find BattleBot and reptile videos. :-p https://youtu.be/LSlqdQADkuI

The last big hurdle that I need to figure out is my watering. Because im on city water I have chlorine and PH issues. I plan to overcome them by filling a tank near the house and then pumping the water out to my growing areas. Because I will have a tank I will be able to let the water gas off (or add a dechlorinator) and adjust the PH every few days to keep the plant happy. Dan @ Columbus Irrigation has been a huge help in getting me a good reliable system put together. The two tank system idea is what I was going to use to mix and additives however I am going to go with an injector so I don’t use the good/expensive stuff on the garden. I will have Tank > Pump > 2 zone controller > injector > pumpkin patch > garden / gourds Plan to get that ordered this week and set up by the end of the month!

Took a trip around town to get a few things for the patch.

Sunday, April 5 View Page
So I went around and got some things to till into the patch. I really wish I would have don’t this in the fall but oh well – better late than never! 18cf of peat Alfalfa pellets 8-16-16 Boron Iron Manganese Copper Zinc Magnesium I am going to be getting 10-15 yards of dairy compost next weekend, 100lb of humic, several bags of perlite and maybe ill chop up the neighbors dog too and toss it in. haha. Also need to make plans for fence to keep dogs out and shade cloth… Awwww so much to do if I want to get my plants in first weekend of May. Need to check on Dan about my drip system too! Note to self...

Sunday, April 5 View Page
Funny story, a local grower named Calvin was telling me about how the heat and hail can really put a hurting on my plants. I was having a lazy Sunday and fell asleep at about 1PM in my chair. Waking up from a dream about my awesome looking pumpkin plant getting destroyed by hail I sprung into action! Looking at youtube for a few ideas and then off to Home Depot. 3 hours later its starting to take shape. Im going to need lots more glue and PVC. Haha. Also changed the patch size to 25’ x 40’. Now I just need some netting. And a door or 2. Darn you Bubba and all your videos!

Sunday, April 5 View Page
25' x 40' x 6' ill probably add a center spine to it after I till. Maybe not if I think its tough enough. ? . ? .

Monday, April 6 View Page
Today I went to home depot to get a 100’ tape so I could make sure this thing was square. After some fine-tuning it is now a squared up 40x25 rectangle. I was able to pound in the streaks on the other side and glue together some of the hoops. Still lots left to do. Each section will have two connections between one another but it will also have a (probably wood) spine that I will install after I till running the 40’ length. Suggestions..?.. Should I start both plants in the middle and grow them to the end? Or one at each end to the middle?

Tuesday, April 7 View Page
Hoop house is a little over 6' tall in the middle. Its been a really windy day and the structure seems solid.

Tuesday, April 7 View Page
Today I secured the kick boards on the second side, I cut the braces, glued sections together. 2 hoops are glued together so I can take it apart if need be. Tomorrow I need to find a home depot that has some crosses so I can finish! I also need to get a spreader so I can get my ferts down... I hope to get about 10-12 yards of compost this weekend as well as add everything else. Still waiting on 100lb of humid from the WizZ aaaaand some perlite. I think thats it.... Then start seeds and GO. Oh - need to order a shade / hail cloth.

Wednesday, April 8 View Page
Took the day off on working after work. Rest is niiiiice! I did get almost all the rest of my ferts though! These and others will get put down on Saturday.

Friday, April 10 View Page
Very productive afternoon! First I made my back single gate a double. This will allow me to drive my truck in for easy unload of compost tomorrow. Aaaaaaand hopefully unload a big pumpkin?

Friday, April 10 View Page
After the gate I put on all my fertilizer per the soil report. Went on the low side as I can always add more. Hard to take away. In total 200-ish lb.

Friday, April 10 View Page
and actually before the ferts I was able to finish the hoop house! Woo Hoo... If I get better at this pumpkin thing I do have room to grow more.

Friday, April 10 View Page
A few hundred pounds of peat....

Friday, April 10 View Page
And last for today.... Spread everything out. Ready for 10 yards of compost tomorrow. Current plan is 2yd of dairy and 8yd of yard compost. I still need to get my drip system from Dan - busy guy. Then next Saturday - I till and start my seeds.

Saturday, April 11 View Page
Big push to get the patch done this weekend. Needing to load, transport and unload 12-ish yards of compost.

Saturday, April 11 View Page
Dairy compost went over the whole patch. Then 2.5 yards per 10' of house. Was only able to get 2 loads in today as I had to go get some Humic from the RMGVC.

Saturday, April 11 View Page
On the way back I stopped at the Hydro store for some other goodies.

Saturday, April 11 View Page
Spread everything out. . .

Today I found out that a woodpecker has made a home in one of my Tiki's... I saw the hole went to look inside and out comes a pissed off woodpecker. LoL... Defiantly not a Las Vegas problem! haha.

I was going to take the afternoon off. I have been going really hard at work then get off, come home and work on the patch till 7-ish. Instead I went to make one of my hoop houses. Should have taken the day off like I had planned. Doh.... Center support. Yeahhhhhhh

Saturday, April 18 View Page
100 % sprout on my 6 seeds... Planted 4/11 - pop on most of them was 4/15. Game plan is 19 days inside for a planting in patch on 5/4/15. I want to transplant them once. Will a 1g pot be enough for 19 days total growth? Or should I go for 1.5g or 2g pot?

Sunday, April 19 View Page
I have been busy with work and doing normal person things like cleaning and doing a little relaxing + we had snow yesterday and the weather this week looks a big cold. Screen is on order for the house. Hopefully Dan can ship the drip system Monday. Need to build proper hoop houses however put some plastic down today to get the soil warming up. Eta to plants in ground = May 4th.

So I had a really bad case of anal glaucoma this morning and just could not see my ass going into work… The result was me bring productive with my plants! I made a stand last night for my new 4 bulb light… Then I transplanted my seedlings into 2g pots that I cut in half. I mixed the soil with Mycos and Azoz then gave them a watering with Marks Mix Root Keeper.

I seem to have a few cooties on my plants already. Errrr look like tiny worms but zooming in i see legs. Any idea what they are and how I get rid of them? Errrrrr They seem to be feeding on the chlorophyll guessing by the tiny dead looking spots. Damn bugs!!! Any and all help with I would be grateful for. I know jack squat about garden type bugs and how to kill them other than the squish method.

First hour of snow.

Saturday, May 9 View Page
Inside still looks good.

Saturday, May 9 View Page
Another hour. Its dark now - snow flakes are smaller. The Colorado Cave is bending - a lot! However so far she has not broke. Wonder what the morning will bring. Thank goodness I have not planted yet!

Friday, May 29 View Page
So I have been busy lately, lack of updates… So the snow did not actually break anything with the hoop house, however, it did bend the toe boards and the steaks almost 90 degrees. It also stretched the PVC, all and all a real pain in the ass. To fix the issues without taking the screen off and PVC down I just added in more side supports. Good enough!

Friday, May 29 View Page
Skip ahead a few weeks… Plants went in the ground, and I tilled up 10’ out and put down my walking boards.

Friday, May 29 View Page
I am going to try some giant tomatoes in pots, 1 pot is a 15g the other is a 10g.

The 1900 Barron is off and running, I have my first female that looks like she will show at about 12', maybe another 10 days till that may be ready? Beside him going the other direction is the 1700 Barron, this plant is shooting off tons of females and look to have one at about 10' that I'm going to try. On the other side I have the 1947 Clementz that is rocketing, it was a back up plant that i planted but it is running, FAST!!!

The last 3-4 days my water use has been going down despite me not changing anything. I took apart the drip system today at the fert injector and found my filter to be damn near totally clogged. DOH... Fixed that and I'm rolling again. Adding that to my bi weekly to-do list. And a few day old picture of the tomato. She is past 18" now. WizZ tells me I may have a shot at the state record! Wonder what everybody else has????

So I am learning lots and lots this year. I had been reading the sheet that Matt D made and knew that I had powdery mildew. NOOOOOOOOO Amazon, Eagle-20 STAT!

Thursday, July 30 View Page
Eagle-20 in hand I gave the whole patch a good spray. Questions I was hoping some of you could help answer. -Is this a systemic product or work on contact? -Should I reapply, as in what if I missed a spot, or leaf? Hopefully this will kill it dead, this stuff is defiantly the strongest product I have ever used.

Thursday, July 30 View Page
The second problem I currently have is that I have 4 or 5 leaves that are a bit crispy. I have been sick the last few days and not in the patch much so not sure when this really took place. Steve Minor said too much Nitrogen. That would hold true as I have been upping my use of N. As such I will cut the use of N in half. Any other ideas, or thoughts on this?
