Happy new year, and good luck to everyone in 2023!
Plans for this year,
Marrows? Of course!
Field pumpkins? Hmmm, do I want to grow them again or not? I dont know! Do I need to? No! Do I want to whip everyone again? Hell yes!!! ;)
Butternut squashes? Chris Brown's been flirting me with them for a couple of years, reckons I'd have no trouble getting them to 100 lbs. I've no idea but looking forward to a new challenge!
Cucumbers? I seem to be going backwards rather than forwards with these but we'll try again!
No AG's for me this year I don't think.
Let's go!
Mark.

Thank you GPC for my awards, I love them!
Also a big thank you to Patrik Ressel for bringing them back from the big show and shipping them to me. Top man, much appreciated.

Butternut squashes are a go!, I gave them a two week head start on the marrow and fp's as I understand that the fruits may grow for an extended period of time and the plants may be a little slower to establish. These were sown on the 15th of May. Plan is to grow three plants, and grow them in the same way as I grew the WR FP last year. I'm hopefull they will like our climate as I've had to cut my marrow line up down to 8 plants this year to accomodate them grrrrr.

Having a change this year, rather than grow just a 'pumped up' main vine up a piece of string I've decided to build a trellis and let them have some short side vines.

Well we've had a windy old time in Dorset over the last few weeks and most of the plants have stuck up to it fairly well. This is the 168.7 FP plant, the 268 and 218 plants are equally as good. Everything is looking good with these.

This is my pride and joy of the butternut squash plants, the 55 brown.
The 104 Ruffruff is doing okay but not quite as vigorous as this one, and the 65 brown is still hanging in there but has taken a battering from the winds.

The Marrows are doing okay, this is one of the better plants but I have a couple that are struggling to throw out side vines and one that looks as though it's coming down with some sort of virus. Nothing here that's convincing me it's gonna set the world on fire but then again it's often the case of which one grows a marrow that doesn't split rather than 'best plant' with these!

I'm very happy with how things are progressing with the cucumbers, these are without a doubt the biggest plants I've had in terms of leaf area as I have left some side vines for the first time. Not sure this is the right thing to do or not but I will soon know lol

It's not been the best summer for outdoor growing, too windy with little sun but I'm happy with how the plants look with this in mind.
Here are three of my marrow plants. I've lost two marrow plants to some sort of disease so I only have six plants now which is half as many as I had last year. I feel I've cut myself a little short as I won't be able to afford to lose too many to splits this year.

Field pumpkin plants.
I've recently got what's app and just for fun started a group up, if anyone's interested in following my progress on there then mail me your contact and I'll add you. (Sense of humour essential)

This is the youngest one which was set on the 11th of August. The others were only set a few days before. Its been a cool cloudy july/August here so everything's been slow.

It's not been a fantastic year in the patch for me,
Started out with 8 marrow plants,
Lost two of them to viruses before fruit set,
Split five,
Didn't have one to take to Malvern,
One sound marrow left in the patch (I think)
200 lbs +

And a butternut squash that's about 80 lbs I think.
Good luck to everyone at the weigh offs.

So I weighed my only marrow for the year at sunnyfields last weekend.
After what has been a challenging year I ended up with a new PB and just missed the WR.
253.5 Baggs 23 (235 Baggs x 256 Sjodin)
I've seen a lot of good from the 235 seed this year so I'll be planting it heavily next year for sure.
To be continued........
